Cheetah Cubs.

On the 8/1/08 along the Kenya /Tanzania border, i found a female cheetah with little cubs sleeping under the shade of a croton bush. This female with her cubs was seen on the 19/12/07 and since then she has not been seen again. I drove to about 50m away, stopped and switched off the engine. The cubs were a little scared but the mother wasn't shy, although she kept her stare on me.

They are about 2 months old and looked very beautiful. Their silky-fur black with faint black spot and a cape of long, blue-grey hair over their bodies make them lovely. I watched for quite a long hour since there were no tourists around. The mother went closer to the cubs to lie down. The cubs came one by one and suckle ungrudgingly.

I have been monitoring these cheetahs since then and on 17/01/08 in the morning around 8.17 a.m, i found her feeding with her cubs. She had killed a Thomson gazelle and had eaten much of it. A family of black-back jackals were surrounding hoping to get something, which eventually they got because the cheetah seeing all these jackals went off with her cubs. Today i found her with cubs playing and climbing a dead tree. Very interesting little cubs.

Thank you for this good news! The cheetah is an endangered species, so, the prescence of cubs is a very wellcome information!

Yes F.J., I worry about the future of this beautiful species also. I know there are programs where cheetas are exchanged to improve and strengthen their genetic diversity. I just wish the lions and hyenas would give them a break!

Theresa, yes, the competition with lions and spotted hyenas is very hard for the cheetahs, but, at least, is something that that I think cheetahs can deal with, since this has beeing happening since thousands of years ago. Now to this problem we must aggregate the loss of habitat and prey by man-made actions, sport hunting in some areas in despite that the cheetah is an endangered species, poaching, virus transmited by the maasai´s dogs in the Mara-Serenguetti area, and as you said, genetic problems in their reproduction.

Dear God, I knew lions and leopards where hunted for "sport", I didn't know that the cheetahs fell victim to this as well...perhaps their black marks on their lovely faces are from tears after all...

We found a Mother and 2 cubs in the Mara, on 2nd March 2008. I have a photo at http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2050/2356796435_22bebe8166.jpg

I'd say they were about 4 months old or so...perhaps the same family as yours?
