How much do we need to save the Mara Triangle?

About US $50,000.

Wildebeest crossing the Mara.

That's $50,000 a month.

Unfortunately it's not cheap to manage the Mara Triangle, as it covers a very large area of 510 sq kms, which borders Koiyaki, Narok, and the Serengeti in Tanzania -you can look at Asuka's latest post for a map.

It is critical that we have the funding to be able to continue with both day and night patrols of the Mara Triangle. Without these operations poachers will soon realise that they are able to access the Triangle without being apprehended.

For anti-poaching and de-snaring patrols, as well as anti-animal harassment patrols, we have a team of 42 rangers who each need to receive a regular salary. We have to pay for patrol rations, fuel for all of the vehicles, as well as vehicle maintenance.

We also have to consider the 9 Community Scouts whose work is critical in maintaining good relationships between the Mara Conservancy and the local community. Ideally we would like to continue the compensation scheme for cattle killed by predators, which had put a stop to revenge killings. We were also previously in a position to help the local community by catching cattle rustlers, and return cattle to their rightful owners.

Buildings and road maintenance are incredibly costly, but also necessary for the upkeep of the Triangle, and there are also the administration expenses and office costs, and all the extra staff that are needed there, not including all of the casual labour who we have unfortunately already had to lay off.

And so we need $50,000 a month.

Which hopefully now doesn't seem that much, especially when you think of how much the Mara Triangle is actually worth to us all.

Please, dig deep, and if you can, set up a monthly donation to the Conservancy so that we can start thinking about the long-term again. Please also use the 'Share this' button below and email this post to all your friends. We really need a lot of support.

Thank you.

Hello Kimojino

I visited the Mara in 2002 and will never forget my time there. I'm going to do what I can to get the message out and I've also made a donation -it's all I can give right now, but hopefully I'll be able to give more very soon.I hope you all will be able to keep up the good work.

Hi Joseph, today I found this WildlifeDirect website and I was reading it with great interest.Friends and I had booked a trip to Kenya for March, we also had planned to visit the Mara. Due to the post-election violence we had to cancel the trip for now, but hoping to visit Kenya as soon as the situation comes to a peaceful solution. Our guide Steve Wahome keeps us informed, for now I have send a donation to support your good work and I'm looking forward to visit your country. All the bestUrsula
Joseph - thank you for your updates. The Conservancy work is so very, very important for the Mara. It breaks my heart to know what is happening there. I will send in another donation this coming pay period.

Ursula, even tho your trip has been postponed it is great that you have sent in a donation. Hope your friends will do the same. I have been visiting the Mara since 1995 and I know when you finally get there you will have a wonderful time. Will be going again this September no matter what!

Joseph, I just made another donation now to protecting the Mara. The first one was made on Dr. Leakey's blog for $250.00, I hope you have recieved it by now. Ursula, thank you for donating and sorry you felt you had to cancel your trip. I would be very interested how you found the WLD website, was it from word of mouth or searching the net? They have an E-newsletter you could sign up for and forward it to anyone who you think might enjoy it.

Hi Dipesh, I read the article with a very heavy heart. Personally, I would feel perfectly safe to travel to Kenya to see the wildlife right now! I, too believe this has been over played in the media as far as safety issues go in visiting the national parks. As for anyone who might be thinking to yourself, then why don't you go, well I'm not a rich women but a working girl. I send my donations to WLD and I pray alot!
