Friends of Who?

Friends of Conservation, that's who.

Ben standing on the bio-gas project.

Back in the beginning of October last year, Ben Longisa introduced us to the bio-gas project at Enkereri. Mentioned in the blog post was that Friends of Conservation were able to fund three quarters of the project and we gave a small link to their website.

What I didn't realise however was that Friends of Conservation was founded by Jorie Butler Kent. Now Jorie Butler Kent is also the Vice-President of Abercrombie & Kent (A&K), which was founded by Colonel John and Valerie Kent (parents to Anne Kent Taylor), and it is the Abercrombie and Kent Group of Companies (including Akorn DMC) who have assisted Friends of Conservation "to allocate more than 85% of contributed support to projects."

Okay, with all the double barrelled surnames I know that that's not so easy to follow, but to cut a long story short, the last link is that A&K also own Sanctuary Lodges, who own Olonana Camp just outside of the Mara Triangle, so I think it's safe to link Olonana Camp with partly funding the bio-gas project at Enkereri.

So why do I think you want to know? Well, it's all going up on our Camps and Lodges page, linking each camp and lodge with their community and conservation projects in the area. I know I promised to do this months ago, but eventually we're getting there.

I was at first a bit worried that some camps and lodges would have no projects behind their name, but when I saw that Serena Hotels won the 2008 Skal International Ecotourism Awards I realised that after being in the area for more than 35 years they must have a tonne of projects under their belt. Right?

Thanks Will for looking into this. It's great to hear about the good work being done and I look forward to hearing more about the projects supported by Serena and other camps and lodges in the area.
